It's May 15th, 2025. Sherpa Palchen Tamang stood just below the Hillary Step, one of the deadliest choke points on Mount Everest, staring down at a ma...

When the Sherpa says we turn back, you turn back. If you refuse, you're on your own. Simple.

So, he didn't LET his climber die. He just accepted that he couldn't STOP his climber from dying.

No Sherpa let his climber die. He made a decision not to die along with the climber he was guiding. What a story. Thank you.

When a climber inadvertently chooses to commit suicide through misadventure, it shouldn’t require his guide to do the same.

Sherpas should not die for clients. When a Sherpa dies, he usually leaves behind a widow and children. Nepal is an impoverished country with a government that can not afford to look after widows with children

He wasn’t a coward, he saved his life and the well being of his family. If the Sherpa advises you to turn back or you will die and you refuse, they must save themselves from the clients ego!

It's wild to me that anyone would find what Sherpa did as cowardly. What was he supposed to do? Sit down beside a man who won't move and that he can't move and just freeze to death and die?

Palchen Tamang relying on muscle memory to get back to base is an amazing feat! The Sherpas are a league of their own.

Something similar happened in 2023 when a Sherpa had to rescue a man from the death zone and after wrapping him up in a warm sleeping mat, had to physically carry him down to the nearest camp. The Sherpa, named Gelje had to call off his own client's climb to rescue the man. When the man reached back to his home country, he made full use of that incident for social media points. He gave talks about the rescue. He posted many posts thanking his sponsors and his partners... except Gelje who saved him. When Gelje heard of the exclusion, he tried contacting the man, and got blocked instead. That ungrateful man's name? Ravichandran Tharumalingam.

If someone says, "i wont move" in the death zone and after not listening to the guide, should be an auto bye-bye after 10 minutes of convincing.

This is one passionate video. I can really feel your frustration toward the irresponsible climbers and sympathy for the Sherpas.

Sherpas should not wait more than an hour, much less if you ask me, if a climber refuses to move or listen to instructions. We hired a company that provided Sherpas for a special trek we took in the Himalayas many years ago. We were told not to tip the Sherpas and the company would tip them for us. That was a big fat lie. We grew to love those guys and after two weeks when we found out how little they were getting paid, we paid them what we thought they were worth. They were so appreciative, that after our trek was over, they secretly invited to take us on a two week-long trip into a valley where their families lived. That valley was so magical. We have traveled the world to over 40 countries, some multiple times, and I have never experienced another place so amazing. We went around meeting and staying with their families. That valley had such a powerful amazing spirit, that it changed my life forever. Those poor families were the most generous people we have met. We had to hide money around their homes, after they kept refusing to accept anything for their generosity. We didn't see any trash or noisy tourists the entire trip. I could have lived the rest of my life there. Nepal should be ashamed by how terribly they treat the courageous Sherpas who really do all of the work during these mountain expeditions.

When a Sherpa, a local guy, genetically adapted to live in the harsh mountainous environment, (cold and poor in Oxygen) tells you "Don't move forward, otherwise, you'll die", you should listen to him. Sherpa are brave men, they do one of the most difficult job in the world, they have families and kids waiting for them...

Big salute to Nepalese people and Sherpas for their humility, respect, care, helpfulness and sense of responsibility which is difficult to find anywhere else. I recently went to an winter artic expedition in northern Sweden in around -25 to -30°C. Our group had a Singaporean tourist who didn't listen to our Tour Guide to proper cover her face. She ended up with a really bad frost bite on her nose. The Swedish tourism agency just told her you are responsible for your own safety and she had to immediately return back to Singapore for her treatment. I think Sherpas are underappreciated and not acknowledged because the tourists take their niceness for granted and don't respect them enough.

I don't care how much you're paying me. If I die ,I can't use the money . I'm not dying for you.

Thank you for telling stories of the sherpa themselves. They never get enough credit and acknowledgement for the crazy job they do risking their lives every year. Please do more videos like this in the future

I’m never climbing Everest, but if I did I fully expect the Sherpa to abandon my ass if I’m not moving.
