Gaming went downhill when investors and shareholders became the target audience instead of the players.

1990's - Here's a game
2000's - Here's a game with a store
2010's - Here's a store with a game
2020's - Here's a casino disguised as a game... with a store.
"Lecturing them for not wanting to swim in the pool that they just pissed in" this is just too perfectly accurate

When buying isn't owning, I sure as fuck ain't spending 80 bucks on some slop, that's gonna get abandoned in a few months, because shareholders didn't see 2137 gazillion dollars increase in revenue.

There was a massive shift in corporate behavior when we stopped being "customers" and they started calling us "consumers", and I'm tired of pretending there wasn't.

15 years ago marketing 101 would have told you not to insult your customer. No matter I got my indie games and old ps2 games i am good

Video games used to be made FOR gamers, to make money. Now games are made to make money, FROM gamers. If buying isn't owning...

There are plenty of “stay at home sons” that work two jobs and pitch in to make sure the family survives. Absolutely no shame in it

Lets not pretend like double A and triple A mean anything. Its corporate buzzwords that suggest their games are top of the line without any pedigree to qualify it.

I am a medical doctor and a stay-at-home son. Recently out of a 5 year relationship with my ex fiance and needed to get back on my feet, and moving back in with my folks for a temporary period is a blessing as I love my parents dearly and I cherish every day I can spend close to them.

They said buying isn't owning so I went back to sailing because you can't steal something that can't be owned.

It’s simple. Consumers wouldn’t mind buying a game that’s $80 if the game was actually worth $80. They want us to buy a $80 game that’s unfinished and worth $40 max.

Indie studios are doing better because they aren’t corporations with shareholders who have never played a video game in their life.

Weird bc I remember this happening in the early 2000s too. There was a spat of ceos and devs basically calling gamers dumb or losers or 'will buy whatever', TB used to cover it.
It was about 4 years and then they started losing a ton of money and suddenly everything changed. I wish so bad, having seen this across many industries and society, that we could end this stupid hubris cycle but alas... Nope. This is the curse of aging, to see your cycles hit every recurring generation and then realizing nothing ever changes, it just looks different.

70 bucks for a mediocre gaming experience is not worth it....
I can use that 70 bucks to buy 4 maybe 5 good indie games that I'll have fun on

Steam has really skewed my perspective for game prices. If I pay $50 for something, that's VERY rare and only happens a handful of times per year if that. My usual "sure, I will check this out" price is around $20. When something on my wishlist drops to $20 or less, I will usually snag it. So, the idea of $80+ games is just completely foreign to me. I just don't buy new releases anymore and haven't for a long time. To me, a game that came out five years ago is still "new" and those can be had for peanuts during the right sale. Hell, even PS5 games drop to $30 for the physical edition after not too long.
