I remember in one of your old simulations years ago the goal was to move to the right, but there was one creature that was AMAZING at moving to the left (way better than any other creature) but it was excluded because it went the wrong way.
I still think about that injustice from time to time π’

Hooray, jelly evolution is finally here! One thing I really like about the Jelly is that it doesn't have a "kill state". In the original simulation, once all nodes hit the ground, the creature is doomed to never move anywhere again, but that can't happen here, which sort of gives all the creatures a chance! I guess there's the inverting of the cells that can hamper it, but never to the point where it's doomed, never to move again.

I've always wondered if randomly-generated jelly creatures could walk to the right a significant distance. Finally an answer to the age-old question!

I just tried out the simulation. In mine, every 30 or so generations one creature would take over and become 99% of the population, before falling down and having another one take it's place. It took 181 generations to get 50 centimeters. The final organism used a strategy where it'd expand it's back "foot" then one in the middle, and finally another one in the front.

7:42 I immediately recognised that music from World of Goo. I love that game, and I love the reference to the signs too.

The worst creature in the first generation went further left than the best creature went right, history repeats itself.

7:45 using the World of Goo soundtrack here is hilariously fitting, especially with the measurement goal

"these creatures have negative fitness"
All it means is they're facing backwards; they have a good gait, you just need to flip them!

I literally just started rewatching the original evolution simulator series a half hour ago, great timing Cary.

I love these videos. The small details like the tolling bell whenever the jellies die between generations - perfect.

4:50 Tywyz was actually one of the best walkers. In the beginning, you can take any creature that walks negative distance and flip it around left to right, and it's the same as a successful creature.
