Daniel's talent is beyond amazing. The fact they needed to blur his self-portrait was not for "dramatisation " by the documentary in the slightest. It would of been like looking at a photograph of the young man.

The link between early childhood trama and mental disorder is crazy. It’s like something in their mind disconnects as a coping mechanism.

These types of documentaries are so important in how they humanize people. It’s so easy to fear and loathe severe mental illnesses like psychosis. It’s so important to learn to see people are all deserving of being seen as human beings and deserving of basic human dignity

Daniel makes the most beautiful charcoal paintings, they look like someone taking a picture a picture of Brad Pitt. Amazing.

My mom just retired from an all male forensic unit at our state mental hospital. It takes a special person to do this work. Mr. Daniel’s drawings my goodness. He’s so talented. Wow. So many brilliant but broken minds in this world ❤

Having worked as a nurse in various public hospital & forensic facilities I can say that whilst it was challenging- at times confronting and sometimes dangerous- for the most part it was a privilege. I learned alot about myself and others and got to meet beautiful, talented, special people who I would have otherwise never crossed paths with had I not looked them when I was a nurse considering my relatively sheltered, comfortable suburban upbringing.

God bless all the staff! You know they go to work and think “I’m not paid enough to work

My brother was a nurse of this type of institution but he got hurt twice. I’ve met people they look for other jobs because it takes a lot of your energy and affects you mentally doing this type of work. Very good documentary.

The sounds of the keys jangling always brings back memories. And “but most of them are celebrating lunch” is such a fitting statement. That’s basically what you have to look forward to, what becomes a routine; breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks in between.

9:44 can we all agree that Daniel is an outstanding artist!! Just stunning the realism of his pictures, the control of his craft is astounding. It fascinates me how most people who suffer from some sort of mental illness are very creative & usually artists of one sort or another. :face-red-heart-shape::trophy-yellow-smiling::face-purple-wide-eyes::hand-purple-blue-peace::text-yellow-goal:

I saw similar patients in the Vermont State Hospital so many years ago. That’s where I learned the true meaning of Delusions and I thank God we have institutions where the severely mentally ill can be managed and the public kept safe. We need many more facilities of various care levels in every US state. So many people need help that cannot safely be given in an outpatient setting. This video was very well done. It showed staff attempting to give dignity to patients in the most difficult of circumstances.

8:05 I felt this moment was very powerful. Focusing on telling them they are here due to violence, NOT because they have a mental illness. Teaching them that mental illness isn’t the bad part of them, that the violence is, is so important in building a positive sense of being rather than feeling handicapped or hopelessly damaged
40:16 man… this patient is extremely troubled… i cant even imagine what reality is like for him. Just how fast those doctors had to run out of the cell and how the person holding his head walked out with a glove that was shredded… that’s a pretty scary situation, the staff handled it as well as they could
