Christoph Wanner is the first western TV reporter to manage to shoot behind the prison walls on the island of the damned.
The fortress on the island of Ognenny was built as a monastery in the 16th century. Later the "Fire Island" was converted into a gulag for enemies of the state after the October Revolution of 1917. Since 1994 it is a maximum security prison for serious criminals.
Documentary from 2022.

I gotta say that making them work and having to pay victims families is a nice touch, definitely agree with that move

One thing about this prison and similar ones in Russia:
Each prisoner has their crimes for which they are incarcerated described IN DETAIL on their cell doors as well as number of victims.
So, anyone passing by, anyone who is around, guards, visitors, whoever, know EXACTLY who they are speaking with.

That fresco shown at 18:50 is a beautiful work of art. Even in such a hellish place full of the worst criminals, it is somehow uplifting.

I appreciate how they keep reminding us life in prison in Russia, really means life in prison.

The level of immediate compliance to every little command really speaks volumes to their treatment when the cameras are off.

He really said the prisoners cage for yard time was inhumane. Sir, I believe what those men did to their victims was inhumane

It's good that they introduced the unstable character at the beginning to set the tone and ensure that no one sympathizes with any of these inmates later on.

I don't often agree with Russia's government but I do agree that life in prison should actually mean life in prison it's so confusing when it doesn't.

People need to remember these prisoners made a choice to commit brutal murders and horrific crimes. Don’t feel pity for them. They put themselves in this situation.

As an American that spent the ages of 14 to 36 going in an out of jail and never learning how to live like a normal human being that was even somewhat civilized, if my prison stays looked like this I would of learned a lot sooner, I can say that the last 8 years I have been trouble free and watching documentaries like this are always enough reminding that I need what awaits me if I need it

Only 200 prisoners. They must all be a very special type of animal.

Oh my goodness, that poor woman! I can't imagine dying like that, especially from someone who's supposed to love me. 😢

The rainbow letters on the front door of the prison is the most unhinged thing I've seen.

Do I feel sorry for the prisoners? No. I feel sorry for their victims and their families. I hope those guards get well paid

I like how their prison uniforms are basically just Adidas track suits.
